It is officially Super Bowl time. This year the Philadelphia Eagles will take on the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII. I was fortunate enough to go to the last Super Bowl and had an amazing time watching my Falcons play.  Sadly, they lost to the Patriots, but it was an amazing experience.  This year I will be at home with friends and family having fun.  For those of you throwing a Super Bowl party, I wanted to give you some tips to help make your party the best ever.

Super Bowl Details

On Sunday, February 4, die-hard football fans from all over will pack U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota to watch the teams go head to head. Millions of other fans will watch the game at home.  The Patriots are favored but in the big games, you never know what will happen.  I hope it is action-packed and exciting. Even if you don’t like football, there is great food, good company and of course the funny commercials. Here is the key information.

Date: Sunday, February 4th at  6:30 p.m. ET. Pre-game coverage starts at 12 noon ET.

Watch: on NBC

Teams: New England Patriots vs Philadelphia Eagles

Halftime Show: Justin Timberlake will headline the halftime show

Stream: NBC sports app, NFL mobile app on your phone, or nbcsports.com on your computer

Ok, that is the critical information. Now let’s get to the party planning.

Fun Decorations

Football themed parties are pretty easy.  There are so many items you can get at party stores as well as things you can use from around your house.  Make sure your table has a centerpiece that matches the theme.  That along with all the food is a great start to any football party.  Here are some ideas.

Party store – Go to your dollar store or party store and buy football-themed plates, bowls, and cups.  You can pick out brown or whatever your team’s colors are for things like plastic forks, knives and spoons.  These stores will also have fun centerpieces, streamers and props to place around the room.

Get some things like toy footballs to place in drink tubs and on tables.  If you can find whistles or the eye black that goes under the eye those are fun to leave out for your guests.

Drink tubs – if you plan to have drink tubs out with water, Coke and beer then why not spruce them up a bit?  Wrap brown cloth around the tub and use white duct tape to put the football stitches on.  Place toy footballs in with the drinks to make it festive.

Football tablecloth – you can find these at any party store or on Amazon. If you have a green tablecloth already, then just use it.  You can use white duct tape to add the field markers and endzones.

All of these items are inexpensive and can be found at any discount store or dollar store.  You could also get football shaped balloons, pennants and other fun decorations for your Super Bowl party.

Super Bowl Party Games

Everyone will be pretty busy with the pre-show and actual game, but in case you have kids at the party or guests who are not into football here are some ideas.

Bingo  How about a cute bingo card with football-themed images and M&Ms used as markers? They are so cute and easy to make. Just go here for the printable cards and pick up some plain M&Ms, Skittles or Reese’s Pieces at the store.  The kids will love this game.

Chalkboard scoreboard – if you have a chalkboard, put it out with some colored chalk.  Write each teams name on it and then have someone keep score on the board.  You can put pennants or other football decorations on the chalkboard.

Snacks

So now to the best part, the food!  We need snacks for before and during the game.  Here are some easy ideas:

Salami appetizer – Just get salami and place cheese, and olives inside.  Stick a fun toothpick through it and you have a quick and easy appetizer.

Chips and dip – this is a favorite for everyone.  You can just buy salsa and tortilla chips and put them in football-themed bowls.  French onion dip is very easy to make, just mix sour cream and onion soup mix to taste.  Serve that with Ruffles or chips that are a little thicker and you are set.

Spinach dip is another option.  Just get chopped frozen spinach, thaw, drain, stir in sour cream and onion soup mix to taste.  You can serve it with Triscuits. Two packs of spinach and 1 large sour cream carton will easily serve 4 people.

Deviled egg footballs – Make your deviled eggs and then cut chives into short pieces.  Use the chives to make the stitching design that a football has in the center.

Drinks

Well, most people will want beer and Coke so make sure to have that on hand.  Iced tea is another great option.  A few tubs with ice and water bottles, beer and Coke will keep guests happy.  Check out the dollar store or party store for football-themed plastic cups and plates.

If you want to be a little fancier, make beer punch.  You just mix your favorite beer with Sprite and you have a fun SuperBowl party drink.

Beer punch – easy to make and serves 6

Ingredients: 4 bottles flavorful lager beer, 2 cans Sprite, 1 lime (juiced), 1 lemon (juiced), 1 orange (juiced), Citrus slices for decoration.

Directions: In a bowl, mix all ingredients together. Ladle into glasses and serve with ice.

Half-time food

Whatever food you enjoy, make it more festive by putting it on football themed plates.  You can get these at the Dollar Tree or a party store.  Get napkins and centerpieces or fun items that you can put on side tables.  If you have someone who loves to grill, that is perfect for hot dogs and burgers.  Make some potato salad and baked beans and you are sure to please most people.  Pizza is a great way to feed a lot of guests and you can have salad fixings for any vegetarians.  I like to have a tray of raw veggies with hummus or ranch dip.  Other ideas:

Nacho bar – most people like nachos and they are easy to make.  Setup a table and have small bowls (with a football theme if possible) for salsa.  You can label if it is hot or mild.  Then add others for whatever you like.  Sour cream, jalapenos, guacamole, shredded cheese, diced tomatoes, black beans and more.  If you want to add a big bowl of seasoned ground beef, that will make it more of a meal.

On the same table, you can add wings or whatever else you are serving.  If you find cute football bags you could put some wax paper inside and add things like peanuts, pretzels, and chips.  This adds a little stadium feel.

Potato skin football – After baking the potato skins, take sour cream and add two arches one on the top and bottom. Add a line with three intersecting lines to represent the stitching on a football.  It doesn’t have to be perfect, just make it fun.  You can put the sour cream in a Ziploc bag and snip the end to use it as a piping tool.

Dessert

This is an easy area as you can go to your local grocery store and get football-shaped cookies and cupcakes.  Another idea is bake brownies and use a cookie cutter to cut them into football shapes.

Team Oreo ice cream – Get a pack or two of Oreos and take the top wafer off.  Get a spoonful of your favorite ice cream and put it in on the bottom part of the cookie.  Replace the top and then add sprinkles, nuts or whatever you want.  You can put the sprinkles in a bowl so your guest can roll it on their ice cream, or leave out plastic spoons.

If your guests don’t want Oreos, just add some chocolate and caramel syrup with the sprinkles and nuts so they can make their own sundaes.

Enjoy the Game

You have great decorations, fun games, and lots of food and drinks.  Your guests should be very happy with your Super Bowl party.  At the very least, they should enjoy some fun commercials.  If not, they can always go to another room and watch the Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet.

Hopefully, this will be a competitive game that is exciting and action-packed.  I don’t really have a favorite team, but since the Patriots beat my Falcons last year, I may be cheering for the Eagles.  Have fun!
